There is no single box count for a 20ft or 40ft container. The outside dimensions, quantity, weight and handling rules of your cargo determine the plan. Test an identical or mixed order below, then compare the entered, placed and unplaced quantities.
In Standard plan, this calculator tests the quantity you enter. It does not search for an unlimited maximum number of boxes or prove a mathematically optimal arrangement. A plan can use more than one container, so check the container count as well as the placed total.
Test your box quantities
The starting equipment is 20DC. Select 40DC, 40HC or another suitable profile if needed before planning. Your own selection or a saved calculation takes priority over a starting preset. Selecting equipment does not start a calculation.
Keep Standard plan selected for this page’s tests. The separate Equal Quantity FCL mode answers a different question and is not the entered-order workflow described here.
Add one row for each packed box size. Enter outside width, length, height, quantity and weight per item in the selected units.
Keep Horizontal Only unless the packaging and contents permit other transport faces. Set upright, fragile, stacking and maximum stack-load restrictions as needed.
For loose boxes, leave palletizing off. Do not enter individual-box dimensions when the units to be loaded are already complete pallets.
Select Plan 3D Cargo Loading. Read the quantity summary and each container’s loading table. Recalculate after changing an input.

Read placed, unplaced and container counts together
The task summary compares entered, placed and unplaced units for each input row. Placed does not necessarily mean placed in one container. A total of 100 placed units across two containers does not answer whether all 100 fit in one. Open the container-level tables and inspect the distribution of each box size.
An order of three 40 x 60 x 80 cm cartons at 25 kg each and one 300 x 650 x 300 cm item at 50 kg produced three placed and one unplaced in the checked 20DC software test. The oversized item remains in the requested order. A completed calculation with a remainder is not a fully placed shipment.
How many boxes fit in a 20ft, 40ft or high-cube container?
Start with your actual carton sizes and order quantity, not a generic box count. A longer container adds floor length; a high cube adds height. Neither change guarantees another complete row or layer when box dimensions, stacking permission or weight are the limiting factor.

The volumes above are calculated from the displayed software dimensions, not rounded marketing capacities. Door openings and real payload must be checked separately. Confirm the assigned container’s interior, door aperture and permitted load with its operator; Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet guidance notes that specifications vary by manufacturer. Do not treat the configured cargo limits as a legal allowance for every shipment.
Use the outside envelope of the packed carton, including any bulge or attached packaging that occupies space. One row can represent identical cartons; different sizes or handling permissions need separate rows. Enter the count of packed transport units, not the number of retail products hidden inside each box.
Keep dimensions and weight units consistent. When weighing one packed carton, include its packaging. If you model already loaded pallets, use their complete outside footprint, total height and gross weight, including pallet tare once. Do not add a second pallet beneath an already palletized unit or permit vertical tipping merely to improve the count.
AI-generated explanatory illustration: prepare box dimensions, quantities and weights before planning. This is not a measured shipment, a scale drawing or a CBM3 calculation result.
Two reproducible box-loading examples
These synthetic orders were checked with CBM3 11.63.53. Dimensions are width x length x height in centimeters; weights are kilograms per item. Run A and B separately using 20DC, metric units, Horizontal Only and stackable boxes. Leave This Side Up and Fragile off, maximum stack weight unlimited, priority Normal, delivery stop None, palletizing off and global rules off.

Order B places 45 cartons and 10 cases in the same container. These results establish a checked placement of those entered quantities, not the largest possible number. A different permitted orientation or search method can change the arrangement. Do not compare methods after changing their cargo permissions.
Why CBM alone does not prove a fit
For rectangular cartons measured in centimeters, calculate width x length x height x quantity / 1,000,000, then add the row volumes. Order A is 40 x 60 x 80 x 10 / 1,000,000 = 1.920 m3. FedEx’s cubic-meter guidance uses the same volume principle and sums different-size packages separately.
Dividing container volume by carton volume gives a volume-only upper bound for identical cartons, not a loading plan. It ignores wasted strips, permitted faces, non-stackable items, loading access and weight. Avoid a universal fill-percentage adjustment: it cannot prove that your specific order fits. Use the CBM calculator when you only need volume arithmetic.
Check rotation, stacking and weight before increasing quantity
A 40 x 60 x 250 cm item occupies only 0.600 m3. Its 250 cm upright height exceeds this 20DC profile’s 239 cm height. The checked Horizontal Only case left it unplaced; Full 3D explicitly permitted with This Side Up off allowed it to be placed. This changes the handling permission, not the optimizer’s quality. Do not tip cargo that must stay upright.
Empty space is not proof that another carton can be added. The remaining space may be too narrow or may not support the cargo under its stacking rules. The shipment may also reach its entered weight limit before filling the geometric volume. Missing packaging strength, securing, door or transport information still requires review even when the entered count is fully placed.
Common box-capacity questions
Can I test mixed box sizes in one container?
Yes. Add a separate row for each size or rule set and enter its quantity. Check both the whole-order result and container-level quantities; mixed-size planning is not the same as multiplying a uniform grid by its number of layers.
Does a 40ft container always fit twice as many boxes as a 20ft?
No fixed multiplier answers every order. Compare the actual interior profiles with the same carton dimensions and rules. Floor geometry, complete layers, cargo weight and restrictions can change the count.
Can I use inches and pounds?
Choose the matching unit system before entering data and review the displayed units. Do not type centimeter values into inch fields. The worked tables on this page use centimeters and kilograms.
Does Excel calculate the 3D arrangement?
CSV/XLSX import transfers rows to the web calculator; it is not an Excel optimization engine. Use the current template from the calculator, review imported quantities and rotation permissions, and run the web plan. Missing or invalid fields must be corrected rather than silently ignored.
Can I leave quantity blank to find the maximum?
No. This workflow tests an order with explicit quantities. It does not perform an unlimited capacity search or certify a mathematical optimum or minimum container count.
Before using the loading plan
Confirm actual internal and door dimensions, permitted loads, packaging strength, handling clearance and securing arrangements with the responsible loading team. A simulation is a planning aid, not a securing design, VGM declaration or transport-safety certificate. An unassessed check is not a pass.
