How to use the Warehouse Capacity Calculator

Warehouse capacity is a discrete layout problem, not a single percentage of floor area. The calculator separates rack runs, block-stack zones, excluded space, usable height, current occupancy, and an operational target.

Calculation method

Rack-run capacity

Whole bays equal floor of run length divided by bay pitch, unless an explicit verified bay count is supplied. Positions then multiply run count, bays, pallets per bay per level, levels, and depth positions. Partial bays never round upward.

Block-stack capacity

The engine divides zone length and width by the loaded pallet pitch, including user-entered gaps, then multiplies whole positions per layer by stack levels. Optional rotation compares the two orthogonal pallet orientations.

Area, cube, and occupancy

Available area equals gross area minus explicit exclusions or the quick non-storage percentage. Usable cube multiplies available area by usable height. Target occupancy remains an operational planning choice, not an engineering safety factor.

Worked planning example

Two identical rack runs with 10 bays, two pallets per bay per level, four storage levels, and one depth position provide 160 physical positions. An 85% operating target is 136 positions. A separate 20 m by 10 m block zone can hold 495 positions across three levels with the stated pallet pitch.

Why are bays rounded down?

A partial bay is not a physical pallet position, so calculated bay counts are always floored rather than rounded upward.

What is target operating occupancy?

It is a user-selected operational planning target, not a structural safety factor or legal limit.

Does the calculator determine sprinkler or fire clearances?

No. Site-approved clearances and local requirements must be supplied and verified by the project team.

Is the layout preview a construction drawing?

No. The preview is a lightweight schematic for comparing planning inputs and is not CAD or an engineered layout.
