40ft Flat Rack Loading Calculator
Plan cargo within the 40FR profile, then check the actual end frames, support locations and securing arrangement. Geometric fit is not flat-rack transport approval.
Test the quantity you enter and review placed and unplaced cargo. This is a planning estimate, not a maximum-capacity guarantee or transport approval.
Test an entered shipment with the 40ft flat-rack planner while keeping its software envelope separate from the real equipment’s working limits. CBM3 40FR uses 1217 x 244 x 195 cm, about 57.905 m3, and a 45,000 kg cargo-weight ceiling. It is a reference requiring review, not an overhang permit, concentrated deck-load check or a universal 40ft specification.

Open the 40FR loading planner. For a new job, confirm the equipment before entering cargo. The link supplies an initial selection, not an automatic calculation; a saved job or your own selection takes priority.

More length does not mean more upright clearance. The current 40FR planning height is 195 cm, lower than 20FR at 222 cm. This legacy reference differs from the carrier example below; do not substitute a more favorable height merely to make an item fit. The catalog marks this profile as a reference requiring review. The displayed volume is the product of its modeled dimensions, not an enclosed capacity rating. Missing tare, access or structural data must not be treated as a passed check.

The Hapag-Lloyd 40ft Flatrack High Cube / 40ft Platform fleet example separates floor width from minimum width and height from bottom height. These labels are not interchangeable. Its dimensions and mass ratings vary by unit; they are not a universal flat-rack specification.
The current carrier example and the legacy CBM3 envelope describe different references. The carrier values are not silently applied to the calculator. Obtain the booked unit’s specifications and confirmed working limits before using a plan operationally.
Reproduce two entered-order examples
Use metric units, palletization off, Horizontal Only rotation, Stackable off and This Side Up on. Leave global rules and equipment constraints at their defaults, with Fragile off, no additional stack-weight limit, Normal priority and no delivery stop. Enter complete outer dimensions and weight, including a skid or base exactly once.
| Example | Width x length x height (cm) | Entered units | kg per unit | Input volume m3 | Stackable | This Side Up |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: transport crates | 100 x 120 x 100 | 4 | 300 | 4.800 | No | Yes |
| B: upright 200 cm | 120 x 180 x 200 | 1 | 1000 | 4.320 | No | Yes |
| Example | Method | Entered | Placed | Unplaced | Allocated containers | Placed volume m3 | Placed mass kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Max Volume | 4 | 4 | 0 | 1 | 4.800 | 1,200 |
| A | Best Balance | 4 | 4 | 0 | 1 | 4.800 | 1,200 |
| B | Max Volume | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0.000 | 0 |
| B | Best Balance | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0.000 | 0 |
Example B completes with zero placed and one unplaced item: 200 cm exceeds the current 195 cm height. Zero allocated containers does not mean no container is needed; the model found no valid placement for that item. The same input fits the modeled height of 20FR. Example B has an input volume of 4.320 m3 and an input mass of 1,000 kg whether placed or not. Do not turn an upright-only package onto its side just to obtain a placement.
Both automatic methods were run on 6 October 2026 through the installed 11.63.52 Worker and actual default equipment helpers in Node. Independent checks cover quantities, orientation, bounds, overlap, support and payload. These are engine examples, not browser, crane, structural or physical-loading acceptance tests.
Does selecting flat rack allow overhang?
Not in this default planning workflow. An additional test used one 250 x 250 x 50 cm, 100 kg non-stackable upright box with Horizontal Only rotation. Both methods returned zero placed and one unplaced because neither horizontal orientation fits the 244 cm width. The input remains 3.125 m3; open sides do not remove the modeled boundary.
Overwidth, overlength or overheight transport needs a separate equipment and route assessment with the responsible operator. This planner is not an out-of-gauge booking, permit check, folded-end-wall simulation or lifting-path approval.
Weight distribution is a separate check
Hapag-Lloyd’s Weight Distribution Guideline, Flatracks section relates allowable load to contact length and load transfer to the outer main beams. A shorter supporting length can reduce the permitted mass. Special contact arrangements need the operator’s assessment; the headline payload alone is insufficient.
The default CBM3 rectangular floor does not model those beams, bedding or concentrated-load strength. Its cargo ceiling and estimated center of gravity do not certify securing, axle limits or complete loaded gross mass. Add all applicable cargo-side base and packing weight to the input once, but do not invent an equipment tare from the missing catalog value.
Review placed and unplaced quantities before releasing a plan to a loading team. Longer search budgets do not guarantee an optimum. Account access and export availability follow the current tool controls; this guide does not promise unlimited anonymous calculations or exports.

Compare a Long Floor Without Assuming More Height
Measure the complete crate, skid or loaded pallet, including projections, base height and gross cargo-unit weight once. Enter different items in separate rows. Keep upright freight upright, permit only horizontal turning and leave stacking off unless suitable. Do not palletize an already assembled transport unit again. A box envelope does not describe machinery feet, lifting provisions, main-beam contact or securing; known cargo mass is not VGM.
The four-crate input is 4.800 m3 and 1,200 kg. Both recorded automatic methods place it. The 200 cm upright input is 4.320 m3 and 1,000 kg, yet exceeds this profile’s 195 cm height. It remains unplaced despite unused floor space and volume. Zero allocated containers in that isolated rejected test does not mean the order needs no equipment. The same permissions fit the 20FR height; this comparison is not a recommendation to use either actual unit without operator review.
40ft Flat-Rack Loading Questions
How many boxes or loaded pallets fit on a 40ft flat rack?
Test the entered sizes, quantities and rules, then check each row’s placed and unplaced counts. The four-crate example is an entered-order test, not unrestricted capacity. A volume quotient ignores individual dimensions, upright height and complete-unit handling constraints.
Why is the 40FR height different from a carrier’s high-cube example?
They are separate equipment references. The software keeps its current finite envelope; the external high-cube/platform example is not a corrected preset. Confirm the assigned equipment instead of borrowing a more favorable height or payload to turn a rejection into a fit.
Can a load extend over the sides or ends in this planner?
Not in the default modeled envelope. The separate 250 x 250 cm base diagnostic stays unplaced because neither permitted horizontal orientation fits its width. This is not out-of-gauge booking, folded-end-wall geometry, road permit verification or a lifting-path solver.
Can I use the full payload on a short machinery footprint?
Not on the strength of this geometric result. The named weight guideline treats resting length and main-beam transfer separately from total mass. The modeled rectangular deck does not certify those arrangements, concentrated-load strength or securing. Seek the operator’s cargo-specific assessment.
What should I review before sharing a flat-rack loading plan?
Confirm the real unit’s specification and relevant working limits, complete cargo dimensions and mass, permitted handling orientations, support/securement assessment, placed/unplaced quantities and equipment allocation. Keep cargo mass, equipment tare and verified gross mass distinct. Longer search time is not an optimum or transport-safety guarantee.
References and Check Dates
Named technical references: Hapag-Lloyd 40ft Flatrack High Cube / 40ft Platform fleet example and Weight Distribution Guideline, Flatracks section. Fleet fields and guideline text were re-read 7 October 2026; the retained PDF illustration keeps its original 6 October acquisition date. Current CBM3 11.63.55 profile and scoped source/default-input compatibility were checked 7 October. Recorded 11.63.52 engine examples keep their 6 October date; these are not fresh browser, structural or physical-loading acceptance tests.
Software compatibility note, 8 October 2026 (Europe/Istanbul): The planning profiles and recorded example inputs were checked against the source-reviewed CBM3 11.63.56 candidate. The earlier example execution dates remain unchanged; this compatibility review is not a new optimization run or physical-loading test. Fleet-provider and carrier references are not manufacturer approval. Confirm the actual unit dimensions, payload and securing requirements.
How to inspect and hand over a loading plan
Use the selected plan and the complete shipment data. Recheck the result after changing cargo, equipment or handling rules.
See every cargo unit in context
Search the cargo inventory, focus on an item and switch between realistic, operational, top and side views. Inspect pallet layers and height sections.
The inventory separates requested units, units in the selected container, units in other containers and unplaced units. Select a row to find its cargo in the scene; playback and height sections show only part of the complete plan.
Use pallet details to inspect full, partial and mixed pallets. A height section filters the view; it does not remove cargo from the plan. Vehicle bodies and wheels provide visual context.
Prepare clearer warehouse instructions
Use product colors and short codes, named groups and delivery stops. Choose a summary or warehouse PDF for the selected plan.
Assign product colors and short codes to connect the cargo table, 3D view and reports. Group and stop names improve instructions; apply the appropriate loading rules when a sequence must be enforced.
Compare verified alternatives and review any manual moves. A manual reallocation affects the current preview and PDF; saved or shared inputs recalculate the automatic arrangement when reopened. Export again after changes.
Read the estimated center of gravity
Review longitudinal, lateral and height coordinates from known cargo and pallet masses. Check the displayed origin and units before comparing plans.
The estimate assumes each item's mass is centered and excludes vehicle tare. Missing or stale additional-material records can leave the complete-load assessment unavailable; explicitly declare none when no extra materials are present.
Coordinates use the load-space frame, not road height. For Step Deck, X starts at the raised front end and Y at the lower-deck datum; axle-form distances run from the rear toward the cab.
Distinguish the loading unit from its carrying vehicle
This loading unit alone does not define an axle configuration.
Inspect cargo and pallet weight distribution in this loading space. A container, swap body or air-cargo unit does not identify the road chassis, rail wagon or aircraft carrying it.
Axle estimates are available after selecting a supported complete road or rail vehicle. Enter its actual mounting positions, full empty reactions and applicable limits; do not reuse a trailer reference as container or aircraft approval.
