What does CBM mean in shipping?

CBM stands for Cubic Metre. It is the standard unit of volume measurement in international freight. Shipping costs are calculated based on either actual weight or CBM (volumetric weight), whichever is greater.

How do I calculate CBM?

CBM = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m). For example, a box that is 1.2m × 0.8m × 0.5m = 0.48 m³. Multiply by quantity for total CBM. CBM3 does this automatically for all rows.

How many boxes fit in a 20-foot container?

A 20DC container has 33.2 m³ of usable space. The number of boxes depends on their size. CBM3's Best Fit algorithm calculates the theoretical maximum and shows it in the 3D simulation.

What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric (dimensional) weight is calculated by dividing cargo volume by a carrier's volumetric factor: 167 for air freight, 333 for road, 1000 for sea LCL. You pay the higher of actual or volumetric weight.
